Getting Organized

Getting organized does not have to be a one-day project or something that has to be completed in one session.  In fact, for most people, it is better to break the project down into smaller, more manageable parts.  Here are some tips to get started:

  • Look around the area you want to organize and determine what your goal is for the space.  What’s working for you?  What’s not working for you?  How would you like the space to function?  What things do you need to keep in the space?  What things do you need to get rid of?
  • Determine how long you think it will take to tackle the space.  Most people will grossly over/under estimate the amount of time needed.
  • Set aside small blocks of time to tackle the area.  Small blocks of time can be anything from 15 minutes (if it’s a small area) to anywhere from 1-4 hours at a time.  If you have a hard time staying focused on tasks then shorter sessions would be better.
  • For each block of time, determine what you will work on.  Usually when I’m organizing a space, I start on one area and work my way around.  This could mean starting in one corner of the room and working my way around the room until I get back to my starting point.  It could mean starting at the top of the closet and working my way down.  The point is to focus on one particular area at a time.
  • Allow enough time at the end of each block of time to tidy up – relocate things that belong in another room; take the garbage out; bag up/box up any donations and either put them in your car (if you have time to drop them off at a local charity) or set them aside.
  • Relax and reward yourself for making progress.  You did it!!

Be Well in 2012 – Managing Stress

Managing stress is about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions, your schedule, your environment, your relationships, and the way you deal with problems.  Your goal is a balanced life, with time for work, family, socialization, relaxation, and fun –sometimes balancing all of the things can start to break us down, therefore “self-care” is very important.

Here are a few ways you can do something to fill you back up:

  • Spend some time in nature
  • Take a long hot bath
  • Meditate
  • Receive a massage
